Dos Amigos

This joint remindes me of one of my favorite places to go on the west coast for fast, delicious Mexican food. You walk up to the counter to place your order, and within minutes you have a huge burrito in a basket ready to be devoured. Of course that is if you chose them over the tacos, quesidillas, or salads.

The ingredients are all fresh and there are choices galore to make the burrito specific to your liking: rice, black beans, lettuce, salsa fresca, monterey jack cheese, ranchero sauce (mild, medium, hot or XXX), sour cream or yogurt, all on a wheat or white tortilla. When you do finally get your food, you now have to deliberate as to how you are going to attack it, because as I said before, they are BIG! No one that I know that has come here has ever left feeling that they just didn't get quite enough to eat.

But they aren't just big in size, they are also big on taste with all of the ingredients cooked to perfection and mixed just right to create the perfect quick grab for lunch or dinner. This place is a safe haven for those vegetarian eaters out there, as well as those looking for their fill of meat in a meal.

The dining area is pretty big, so finding a seat has never been a problem. The sodas get free refills, but there are also plenty of other options for drinks for those trying to keep all of that extra sugar out of their diet.

Each time that I have eaten here I was never disappointed, from the informative staff, to the amazing food, you are sure to have a great meal here.

I had the Guacamole burrito, white tortilla, sour cream, with hot sauce and a drink all for $7.00 which is a great deal in my book for all that you get!

Geno's Chowder & Sandwich Shop

This has got to be one of my favorite places to go for a relaxing meal in Portsmouth. The restaurant is located off of the main strip in a more residential location and sits right on the water. You can grab a seat on the patio which hangs out over the water, or you can sit indoors. Although it is tiny, it doesn't lack at all in the charm department.

They serve from a simple breakfast menu and lunch is a choice of fresh lobster and sandwiches; all of the food is served on paper plates with plastic utencils, but really you don't need much else! The food is great and the staff is very pleasant and easy to talk to. You can't ask for a better view for a quiet breakfast in the morning.

Both times that I went, I got breakfast: potatoes, bread, muffin, and tea; I was very pleased with my choices and the prices certainly cannot be beat!

If you are looking for a non-touristy spot to enjoy a meal, make sure you check out Geno's.

The Juicery

This place features all vegan & vegetarian food, yum! The ingredients are all natural and organic and they taste quite delicious!

The staff was very pleasant and were working vigourously to chop up fresh veggies and fruits for the food and drinks. The menu consists of juices made on the spot, smoothies, wraps & soups (fall only). With a good list of well described list of wraps to choose from, I was left with a great decision on my hands. I ended up choosing the Japanese Wrap (fresh carrots, avacado, seasoned brown rice & mustard tahini sauce all in a spinach tortilla wrap) and the Berry Smoothie (bananas, raspberries, strawberries & apple juice) and I was VERY pleased with my choices!

The price was a little more than I hoped ($14.75 for a wrap, smoothie & chips), but not that bad for all fresh ingredients. The only places to sit is on a little bench outside, or you can take your food on a short walk to the park to enjoy.

The store is tiny and can be hard to see if you aren't looking for it (I passed by it many times in the car, and didn't notice it until I was walking by) but it is convieniently located across from the large parking garage in town.

Price: $$ (only because it is a little more pricey than most "fast food" places)

Annabelle’s Ice Cream Shop

This little shop is perfect to clean your palette after dinner in town, or whenever else the desire calls for a perfect ice cream cone. Don’t be dissuaded if you see a line inside the tiny shop, it’s just that good and well worth a short wait. The staff moves quickly and you should have your ice cream in no time. All of the ice cream is natural, no preservatives or byproducts; this is 100% the real thing.

The toppings are aplenty ranging from the typical sprinkles and nuts all the way to bubble gum and M&M’s, the syrup choices are vast as well with caramel, hot fudge, strawberries and more.

The prices are very reasonable (cones start at $2.75) and they have a wide variety of options on the menu including chocolate covered bananas, walking sundaes, and brownie sundaes.

My guy and I ordered a “super sundae” to split and it was beyond delicious. For $5.75 we got three big scoops of ice cream, two hard toppings, and two syrups. We were both full after that, it was the perfect size to split between the two of us.

What we ordered:

Super Sundae with dutch chocolate and strawberry ice cream. Our toppings were walnuts, recees pieces and hot fudge.
